Trends in Fertility and the Intertemporal Elasticity of Substitution in Dynastic Models

چکیده
In this paper we study the effects of the intertemporal elasticity of substitution in consumption (IES) on Balanced Growth Path fertility choice in a dynastic model. We find that both the qualitative and quantitative properties of the model are highly sensitive to this key parameter. We give analytic comparative statics results that show why this is true. In versions of the model in which the IES is set to a level common in the RBC literature (less than one) as opposed to levels commonly used in the fertility litterature ala Barro-Becker (larger than one), model predictions of changes in fertility amount to about two-thirds of those observed in U.S. data since 1800. There are two major sources to these predicted changes. The first is the increase in the growth rate of productivity which accounts for about 90 percent of the predicted fall in fertility before 1880. The second is changes in mortality which account for 90 percent of the predicted change from 1880 to 1950. Complements versus Substitutes and Trends in Fertility Choice in Dynastic Models
Demographers emphasize decreased mortality and ‘economic development’ as the main contributors generating the demographic transition. Contrary to previous findings, we show that simple dynastic models à la Barro-Becker can reproduce observed changes in fertility in response to decreased mortality and increased productivity growth if the intertemporal elasticity of substitution is low enough. We...
متن کاملElasticity of Intertemporal Substitution: An Investigation in Iran
We[1] present estimates of the Elasticity of Intertemporal Substitution (EIS) for Iranian households using synthetic cohort panels based on household micro-data. Results show significant difference with the common values used in Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models which are originally based on estimated values for developed countries. We show that this difference has important ...
متن کاملInvestigation on Habit Formation, Risk Aversion and Intertemporal Substitution in Consumption of Iranian Households by GMM Approach
Consumption is the principal feature of Iranâs Gross National Production. Therefore, recognizing of factors that influence it is quite crucial. This article, investigates habit formation, durability, relative risk aversion and intertemporal substitution in consumption expenditures of Iranian households. For empirical study, at first, we constructed two weighted portfolio of the main assets re...
متن کاملConsumption-Based Asset Pricing with Recursive Utility
In this paper it has been attempted to investigate the capability of the consumption-based capital asset pricing model (CCAPM), using the general method of moment (GMM), with regard to the Epstien-zin recursive preferences model for Iran's capital market. Generally speaking, recursive utility permits disentangling of the two psychologically separate concepts of risk aversion and elasticity of i...
متن کاملEstimating the Share and Elasticity of Substitution for Public and Private Health Expenditures in Iran
Background: The rate of substitution for private and public health expenditures is one of the factors that can explain the different effects of public and private health expenditures on health and life expectancy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate the return to scale, share, and elasticity of the substitution for public and private health expenditures in Iran. Methods: In th...
